Innovation and law

General: One may not in any way enter into contracts - large or small – which in any way commit the Department or the University of Copenhagen, without approval from the Head of Department. This also applies to "small" contracts which only concern the use of your results, your right to publish or the like.

The process may seem time consuming and laborious, but it's for your own and the Department's best interests.

Patents and inventions
All inventions made at LIFE are to be reported centrally. Essentially, LIFE owns all rights to inventions made in connection with your work. However, LIFE may not always lay claim to these rights. Read more about patents, inventions and your duties at Tech Trans Unit website.

The Head of Department must be informed of all applications.

The Departments contact person: Head of Department.

The Department’s Innovation Coordinator who can be contacted for ideas and inspiration is currently Professor Barbara Ann Halkier.

Material Transfer Agreements

When colleagues outside LIFE acquire material from us or when we acquire material from colleagues outside the Department, a so-called MTA - material transfer agreement – is required.
This is to regulate IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) if the material is part of an invention, publishing rights, etc.

All new MTAs must be approved by the Legal Department. Contact the Department Administrator if you wish to prepare an MTA / have an MTA approved.

All known MTAs can be signed by the Head of Department.
LIFE has a draft MTA - contact the Department Administrator.

It should be noted that it is not legal to produce ones own draft MTAs, or even to sign the agreement. All agreements will ultimately revert to the Department.

Contracts for 1/3-grants
Contracts must be drawn up for all 1/3 - shared grants, which clearly show who has the responsibility to cover any deficit in the grant as a result of maternity, illness, etc. All contracts are to be signed by the Head of Department following the Department Administrator’s approval.

The Head of Department will sign no contract before being sent a mail or other form of documentation that the Section is willing to assume the payment of any additional expenses.
As for all other types of contracts and agreements at the Department it is only the Head of Department who has the authority to sign, or - in her absence - another authorized person, for example the department administrator or a Section Head.

A standard draft text for co-financing is available - contact the Department Administrator or Department Secretary.

Cooperation and other agreements
All other contracts and agreements in connection with research projects or similar are to be sent to the Department Administrator for approval by the Department as well as approval by the Legal Secretariat. This applies, for example, also to agreements pertaining to transfer of place of employment / residence abroad.

No agreements will be signed prior to formal approval from the Legal Department.
In accordance with all other agreements and contracts at the Department, you are not personally permitted to sign the agreement.

Department Contact: Department Administrator.

Insurance against theft
The state is self-insured, which means that it is not possible to cover the theft of private property from the office of the workplace. Your own private household-contents insurance is to cover this form of theft.

All theft must be reported to the Frederiksberg Police (tel. 33141448) and the operations department: tel. -32086. Outside normal working hours contact the guard at tel. -32086.
