14. Procedure for spring cleaning in GMO 1 laboratory
Spring cleaning should be carried out at least once yearly.
The date of spring cleaning should be noted in the logbook in the safety corner R237.
Everyone working in the laboratories is responsible for cleaning, the duties to be agreed upon among the staff.
Spring cleaning should include:
- Chairs: Wipe clean.
- Fume cupboard: Inside and out, wipe down and disinfect.
- Sterile benches: and out, wipe down and disinfect.
- Fridges: and out, wipe down and disinfect.
- Centrifuges: and out, wipe down and disinfect.
- Reading lamps: clean thoroughly.
- Sink: Decalify.
- Windows: Clean inside panes.
- Tables (including legs): wipe down and disinfect.
- Cupboards: Inside and out, wipe down and disinfect.
- Ceiling lights, pipes and cooling aggregates: wipe clean.
- Window-sills, radiators, grids, electricity cupboards: wipe thoroughly with general cleaning fluids. The waste water must be collected and decontaminated by leaving it with 2ml 15% hypochlorite per liter for at least 30mins. Then discard in sink.
- Desinfection can be performed with 70% Ethanol. Plastic and painted surfaces may be disinfected with 2ml 15% hypochlorite per liter water.
- Ladders etc. used while cleaning: decontaminate with 70% ethanol before taking them our of the laboratory.
- Cloths and sponges which have been used for cleaning must be autoclaved after use.
Use this excellent opportunity for a fridge defrost, tidy and clear up.
