11. Procedure for working with GMO (in a non 'GMO-class 1 + plants Laboratory')
Incubators, freezers, autoklaves and centrifuges can be used for GM organisms and biologically active material as long as the following procedures are followed:
- All containers, flasks and centrifuge tubes must be closed in a GMO laboratory before they are brought into a non classified laboratory.
- The outer surface of containers, flasks, tubes and centrifuge tubes must be cleaned to prevent contamination of the non-classified laboratory.
- Containers flasks and centrifuge tubes must not be opened in a non-classified laboratory.
- This procedure must also be followed when items are used for other than GMO purposes.
- Accidents with spillage in apparatus must be cleaned immediately. Infected cleaning materials must be discarded in a closed container in the non-classified laboratory before transporting to a GMO laboratory where it can be discarded along with other GMO waste.
- Contaminated apparatus decontaminates with 5% Deconex, 10% Rodalon or 70% ethanol which are placed in the non-classified laboratory for this purpose.
- Incubators, freezers, autoclaves and centrifuges must be cleaned and decontaminated each month by the person responsible.
