Poul Erik Jensen employed as Professor - 07.08.2009
Poul Erik Jensen has been employed as Professor at Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology from May 15, 2009. The primary focus of his professorship will be the molecular biology behind photosynthesis in plants.
Throughout his career Poul Erik Jensen has been on the edge of the development within molecular plant science. He is also known for inspiring education and supervision of students.
Poul Erik Jensen is agronomist (1989) from LIFE (Prev. The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University) with emphasis on plant molecular genetics. As PhD student Poul Erik Jensen studied the turnover of nitrogen in plants and he was involved in implementing a number of new molecular methods.
From 1995 Poul Erik Jensen was employed as post doc at University of Sheffield, England where he initiated his research in photosynthesis. He studied the biosynthesis of chlorofyl and identified some of the genes involved. During his stay at University of Sheffield Poul Erik Jensen added protein chemistry and enzymology to his competences in molecular biology.
In 1998 Poul Erik Jensen returned to Denmark for a possition as Associate Professor at Department of Plant Biology. Here he continued his research in photosynthesis using transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana as the model plant.
As a Professor Poul Erik Jensen will continue exploring molecular and biochemical aspects of photosynthesis in collaboration with other Danish and foreign researchers, but he will also combine basic research in photosynthesis with applied research. For example he aims to link the light driven processes from photosynthesis with the production of hydrogen for energy purposes or other compounds with an industrial potential.
