Plant Diseases
Plant diseases are a major cause of losses of yield and spoilage of quality
both during cultivation and after harvest. The course will give the student
an overall introduction to the discipline plant pathology leading to an
understanding of the biological aspects, which are the basis for the
development of plant diseases. This will form the foundation for
understanding basic principles for plant disease management. The student
will also obtain knowledge of methods and technologies used. The biology of
the viruses, bacteria and fungi in a broad sense causing plant diseases.
Introduction to: The concepts symptomology, etiology, pathogenicity,
taxonomy and diagnosis; The molecular, cellular and genetic aspects of
pathogenicity and disease resistance; Basic ecological and epidemiological
principles in relation to the establishment and spread of plant diseases;
Plant disease control measures (disease management) – including
prophylactic measures and biological control, disease resistance,
forecasting, legislation and chemical control; Post harvest diseases and
food safety; Case studies of plant diseases in agriculture and
horticultural systems to facilitate subsequent specialization. Language of
instruction is English.
