Title of lecture:
Unravelling the biosynthesis and regulation of glucosinolates in Arabidopsis
Abstract:
Glucosinolates are bioactive natural products characteristic of the cruciferous plants, which include the economically important Brassica vegetables as well as the model plant Arabidopsis. Glucosinolates have high interest as cancer-preventive agents, biopesticides and flavor compounds. Using advanced bioinformatics and molecular tools for Arabidopsis combined with natural variation this PhD project resulted in the identification of regulators of biosynthesis of glucosinolates and the identification of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of cancer-preventive glucosinolates. The new knowledge provides important molecular tools for e.g. breeding towards Brassica plants with increased disease resistance and high levels of cancer-preventive glucosinolates.
